Aromatherapy – not just a pretty smell
For centuries people have used plants for their medicinal properties, it is well documented that aromatic extracts have been successfully used to prevent illness and alleviate symptoms. Today their medicinal qualities demonstrate nature in one of its most powerful forms, cleansing and healing both body and mind.
Aromatherapy uses purely plant material, preferably organic and sustainable and harnesses the very essence of the plant – hence essential oils. An essential oil is a potent aromatic substance found in tiny glands within the plant and holds powerful dynamic healing properties. Once within your system the oils work to re-establish harmony and revitalise where there is an imbalance.
Each essential oil is unique and consists of many natural chemicals which work together and in turn gives each oil its properties. Some are used to relax, soothe and calm, while others to stimulate, refresh and uplift. Essential oils work synergistically, that is they are more effective when 2 or 3 oils are blended together than when used separately. All essential oils must be diluted before use, either with a carrier oil for massage, water in the bath or a lotion or cream for home use.
Aromatherapy is a gentle approach to health. On a physical level oils are absorbed through the skin and enter the blood stream where they are carried around the body before being eliminated. On a psychological level the quickest way into the brain is through the nose, so aromatherapy can also have a subtle influence on mental and emotional states. The positive effects are felt immediately, though with regular use a sense of well-being and calm will be experienced.
A professional aromatherapist will use a holistic approach with all clients, meaning that every person is treated as an individual. All aspects of health and lifestyle are considered, past and present, so that the cause rather than just the symptoms of ill-health can be addressed. The treatment will then be tailored for your specific needs, usually comprising of specialised massage, taken regularly over a period of weeks, using only the appropriate oils. Advice will also be given on using the oils at home, as with everyday use their therapeutic quality is enhanced and positive results are felt more rapidly. The length of the course of treatments will vary from person to person, often with the massage sessions becoming less frequent and developing into a way of maintaining good health and promoting well-being.
It is recommended when first using essential oils to consult a fully qualified aromatherapist to ensure you get the maximum benefit from your treatment and that the blend chosen is most suitable for you. Check that your aromatherapist has trained to the highest standards and is a member of one of the aromatherapy associations.
